Surprising Hawks must execute vs Rhody Defense

St. Joseph's play-by-play man Matt Martucci was a guest on the College Chalktalk podcast, joining host Chris DiSano to break down Sunday's matchup between the Hawks and URI Rams. St. Joe's is 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while Rhody is looking to start 3-0 in the league for the second year in a row.

Although he felt Phil Martelli's team was slotted appropriately during the preseason, Martucci is surprised by how quickly the Hawks have jelled this season.

"I didn't expect this. I thought this could be maybe a borderline get to the NIT type of year, get back to the postseason, and then see what happens next year type of thing," said Martucci, noting that with a few more made free throws vs Florida and VCU, St. Joseph's could easily be better than their 11-3 record. "This would be a 13-1 team, with a loss on its plate to a very good Villanova team that will be there come March."

With perhaps the best player in the league in DeAndre' Bembry, St. Joseph's improvement can be traced to the development of Isaiah Miles, a Senior forward who has developed into an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year candidate.

"If the season ends today, he is the Player of the Year," said DiSano. "The jump that we've seen from his Junior to Senior year is just unheard of."
